Royal Crescent - Bath

Construído en el siglo XVIII, es una de las obras más destacadas de la arquitectura georgiana.

Royal Crescent da lugar al nombre de la calle en la que se sitúa este monumento, no al edificio en sí. Éste consta de 30 casas en forma de media luna, construidas entre 1767 y 1775 y diseñadas por el arquitecto John Wood el Joven .

Originalmente, aunque la mayoría de las casas fueron compradas por particulares privados, muchas de ellas eran alquiladas por temporadas. Hoy en día la mayoría de estas casas son de propiedad privada.

Otras viviendas se han convertido en espacios públicos, como la número 1, que alberga un museo, o los números 15 y 16 que son el Royal Crescent Hotel.

Tanto John Wood Joven como su padre estaban muy interesados por lo oculto y la simbología masónica. No muy lejos de la Royal Crescent hay una serie de edificios a los que se conoce como el Circo. Es interesante observar ambos edificios desde el cielo, ya que el Royal Crescent y el Circo simbolizan el sol y la luna masónica.

The Royal Crescent is a residential road of 30 houses, laid out in a crescent, in the city of Bath. Designed by the architect John Wood the Younger and built between 1767 and 1774, it is among the greatest examples of Georgian architecture to be found in the United Kingdom.

Together with his father John Wood, the Elder, John Wood the Younger was interested in occult and masonic symbolism; perhaps their creation of largest scale was their joint design of the Royal Crescent and the nearby Circus (originally called "the King's Circus"), which from the air can be observed to be a giant circle and crescent, symbolising the soleil-lune, the sun and moon.

The houses in the Crescent are a mixture of tenures — most are privately owned but a substantial minority of the property is owned by a housing association. Many of the houses in the Crescent have been split into flats.

Number 1 Royal Crescent is a museum, which illustrates how wealthy owners of the period might have furnished such a house. The Royal Crescent Hotel occupies the central properties of the Crescent, numbers 15 and 16.
